Filip Krajinovic has stagnated for a while with the Serbian tennis player never quite finding the right combination to become a better player than he is at the moment. He is ranked 36th which is very good but his potential should have him ranked quite a bit higher than that.
He started 2022 with two solid wins while representing Serbia in the ATP Cup but found himself losing the other two. He lost to Pablo Carreno Busta at the ATP Cup and Diego Schwartzman at the Australian Open. He had chances against the Argentinian but could not overcome his demons.
Krajinovic has dealt with some private life problems in the past year which affected his game deeply, by his admission. The Serbian has resolved those issues and is focused on tennis which should help him improve his play. Whether he can get win number 3 of the season against Popyrin in Montpellier remains to be seen. .
Popyrin’s Slow Rise
Alexei Popyrin was destined to become a very good professional tennis player from a very young age. The Australian always had talent and after starting to train at the famous Mouratoglou Academy he truly made a step forward with his game. In the meantime, he entered the top 100 and won his maiden trophy.
That maiden trophy came in Singapore, in an indoor hard court event that showcases his strong potential for good results in those conditions. He should in theory be a formidable opponent for anybody in Montpellier but he will face another great indoor player in Krajinovic.
The Australian player played four matches in 2022 but he lost three of those. His lone victory came against Stefano Travaglia who is far from a steady top 100 player. He will need to work hard to regain some form because his tennis in 2022 has not been promising. It’s always been a steady rise with him and he has plenty of time to do that.
Krajinovic v Popyrin Prediction and Tip
Both Krajinovic and Popyrin enjoy playing indoor tennis. The Australian has a very strong first serve and a superb forehand which works well in these conditions. Krajinovic’s game is a bit more nuanced with quite a bit of variety allowing him to counter player’s such as Popyrin.
The Serbian played in the Paris Master’s final a few years ago but that was a much better version of him. He certainly has the quality to defeat Popyrin and I believe he showed more in 2022 so far.
Experience and consistency is on his side as well which I think makes him the slight favourite to win this one. I don’t refute the possibility of this going 3 sets so the number of games is something worth looking at as well.
