Bublik Battles Past Griekspoor

Sixth seed Alexander Bublik served 20 aces, 11 more than his opponent, as he moved into the second round of Montpellier with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5) victory over the Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor.

The World No. 35 had nine break point opportunities in the match and he could take just one of those chances. The Dutchman in contrast had just two breaking chances and he converted one of them. Bublik however fared better in both the tiebreaks and made his way into the Round of 16 in Montpellier for a second time. In his only other appearance in 2020, the 24-year-old fell to David Goffin at this stage.

He will be hoping to go further this time around. The win was Bublik’s second main draw victory of 2022. Having started the season with a first round defeat to Aleksandar Vukic in Adelaide, he registered his first win of the season in the first round of the Australian Open as he defeated American Ernesto Escobedo in four. He was dumped out of the opening major by Gael Monfils in the second round.

Bublik is coming off a 35-30 season, which saw him reach two finals in Antalya and Singapore, but his losing streak in finals extended to 0-4.

Herbert Dispatches Gojowczyk

Facing Bublik in the second round will be Pierre-Hugues Herbert, who is playing his first tour-level event of the season. The Frenchman, ranked No. 113th in the world, entered the main draw through the qualifiers and on Tuesday, got his season off with a straight sets win over Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk.

A doubles specialist, who has a career doubles Grand Slam, Herbert needed just 66 minutes to dispatch the World No. 96, 7-5, 6-2.

Herbert won 79% points on the first serve, struck nine aces and converted four of five break points in the match. Gojowczyk held just one break point in the match, which Herbert failed to save. That was the first break of the match coming in just the third game of the first set, but the 30-year-old responded quickly and then took control of the match.

Yet to win a singles title on the tour, Herbert is a four time finalist and one of those finals was in Montpellier in 2019, when he lost to compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Tuesday’s win improved Herbert to 10-5 in Montpellier. He had made the main draw following a come-from-behind win over fellow countryman Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg in the first qualifying round and with a straight sets win over Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin in the second qualifying round.

Bublik v Herbert Prediction and Tip

Bublik will take a lot of confidence from his win over a very strong opponent in World No. 62 in Tallon Griekspoor in the opener. The Kazakh will be hoping to keep the rhythm going in the second round. Expect him to beat Herbert and advance to the last eight.
