Cristian Garin v Sebastian Baez Head to Head

These two players never played against each other and this will be their first matchup.

Top 10 or Bust for Cristian Garin

Firmly ranked inside the top 20, Chilean Cristian Garin finds himself in a pivotal spot of the season with the golden swing. The Chilean naturally plays his best tennis on clay but his form overall has been somewhat shaky. A solid showing in Australia concluded with a loss to Gael Monfils at the Australian Open but he will look to bounce back in Cordoba.

He was champion here in 2020 by defeating Diego Schwartzman in the final and he will aim for a similar result this time around. His journey will start against another Argentinian in Sebastian Baez and that will be a tricky matchup.

Garin has a steady game where nothing jumps off the page but it’s very solid overall. He reached the top 20 with that level but it’s unlikely he can take it further.

Time will tell but 2022 is a very important season for him. Either he elevates his game further and takes himself into the top 10 or he will see himself drop on the rankings. All 5 of his titles came on clay and that’s the issue. He need to find a high level on other surfaces as well.

Baez and a Dream of Native Winner

Argentinians are passionate sports fans and every time their player plays on native soil it’s a festival. They are passionate in fans and nothing makes Argentinians happier than seeing a native player lift the trophy. As every year they will look for that at this tennis event where native players lifted the trophy two times in the past three years.

Sebastian Baez is one of those potential winners and the young player is certainly dreaming of native success. He never won a title before but he had a breakout year in 2021 that saw him enter the top 100 for the first time in his career.

He had a solid showing at the Next Gen Finals in Milan as well proving that he firmly belongs amongst the best young players.

2022 started off well for him as he played superb tennis down under scoring multiple victories in each of the events. He took a set off of Stefanos Tsitsipas as well which is quite respectable.

He will now look to take advantage of the golden swing where he is a dark horse candidate. After all, he posted a 52-12 record on the surface last year.

Garin v Baez Prediction and Tip

This is a very interesting matchup between two players that have a different way of playing on clay. Baez is a very aggressive play who is not afraid of going for it during rallies. He stands far back behind the line but he is very capable of going on the counter and does that fairly well. Garin is a bit more reserved in that sense but his precision from the line is hard to overcome.

Baez is certainly the player that will go for it more and against Garin that is the only way you can play. If you hit cleanly, you can win, if not you will lose as he will exploit the massive number of errors. Garin is more experienced, he has better stamina overall and that should prove key.

Baez can certainly win this match, especially with his recent level as it’s been impressive but I fear he might not do well against Garin. The Chilean is just too solid and unless he plays a completely terrible match I don’t see Baez running away with it.
