Stefano Travaglia v Yuki Bhambri Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 33-year old Italian, and the Indian, who is four years younger.

Travaglia Snaps Losing Streak

Travaglia reached his first ATP final a year ago, beaten by compatriot Jannik Sinner in the Great Ocean Road tournament in Australia.

Better known as a clay court player, he did achieve success on this surface in a Challenger event in Romania in November.

He had not enjoyed the best of starts to 2022 before arriving in Pune.

He was beaten in the opening round of the Melbourne Summer Set tournament, and, after qualifying for Sydney, lost in the opening round again.  A four set defeat at the hands of Roberto Bautista-Agut in the Australian Open meant three consecutive opening round defeats in the main draws of an ATP event.

He finally stopped the rot with a hard fought win over the Indian number one Ramkumar Ramanathan on Monday.

He took the first set on a tie-break, before dropping his serve at the start of the second match, enabling Ramanathan to level the match.

One break of serve, though, proved to be enough for the Italian in the third set.

Bhambri Last Indian Man Standing

Bhambri is the last Indian man  standing in the singles in Pune, a fact that would have seemed unlikely at the start of the tournament, given that he failed to play a single competitive match due to continuing fitness problems between March last year and entering the qualifying competition for the Australian Open last month, where he lost in the second round.

Despite that he defied all expectations to beat Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia, a man ranked almost 700 places above him, in their first round match.

Kovalik took the first set on a tie break, but Bhambri was always in the match, saving 16 out of 18 breakpoint chances created against him and always ready to convert his own opportunities when they came along.

That enabled him to level the match and then finally seal the win after more than three hours on court, a big morale booster for him. It was just a  pity that Covid restrictions meant there were no Indian fans in the stands to witness it.

Travaglia v Bhambri Prediction and Tip

Bhambri did very well to upset the form book in his first round match, but to expect him to do it for a second time might be asking too much.
