Brandon Nakashima v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

The pair have met twice before in the quarter-finals of the two tournaments last year in which Nakashima went on to reach the final, Los Cabos and Atlanta. The first match was a three set affair, and the American won in straight sets in the second.

Nakashima Deals with First Australian Challenge

Nakashima, back on home soil after reaching his first quarter-final of the year in Sydney last month, was given a difficult-looking first round tie with the world number 89, the experienced John Millman.

In the end he dealt with the challenge of a man 12 years his senior comparatively well.

The first set was dominated by serve to such an extent that neither man created a break point, until with a  tie-break looming, Millman offered Nakashima one opportunity which he duly took.

Millman looked to have forced his way back into the match when he broke the American early in the second set, only to drop his own serve five games later.

This time it did go to a tie-break, and it was the Australian with the early advantage. But two dropped serves gave Nakashima the chance to set up match point. He needed no second opportunity and booked his place in the second round to face another Australian.

Thompson Beats Spanish Veteran

Thompson will have been disappointed to have been knocked out of his home Grand Slam in the opening round, especially as he was a set up in his match with Steve Johnson at one stage before losing in five.

However, he got back to winning ways with a straight sets win over the Spanish veteran, Feliciano Lopez, now 40,  in the first round in Dallas on Tuesday.

The first set was largely dominated by serve, although Thompson had to save a couple of break of points along the way.

The first chance, though, that he got against the Lopez serve he took, and the first set belonged to him.

He then consolidated his position by breaking early in the second set.  With neither man creating any further break opportunities after that, Thompson was able to serve out.

Nakashima v Thompson Prediction and Tip
