Fognini Returns to QF For First Time Since April

Fabio Fognini reached the quarterfinals of a tour-level event for the first time since the Monte Carlo Open in April last year, as he knocked out Spain’s Pedro Martínez 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in the Round of 16 in Buenos Aires.

The Italian, who was a runner-up in 2014, will be featuring in the quarterfinals of the Argentina Open for the third time in what is his 13th appearance.

Having struck a lean patch over the last 10 months, the 34-year-old will look at this as an opportunity to go even deeper. Seeded fourth in the tournament, Fognini, received a first round bye. In the second round, he lost serve on the very firs game of the first set, but fought back with two breaks to take the first set.

Both players broke each other twice in the first five games of the second set and then Fognini failed to capitalise on a match point at 4-5 (30-40), but he managed to edge the tie-break for a well fought win in two hours and six minutes.

The World No. 40 Fognini, who went 22-24 last year, improved to 2-2 this year with Thursday’s win.

Delbonis Continues March Forward

Back-in-form Federico Delbonis reached the quarterfinals in Buenos Aires for the fourth time in his career. The 31-year-old left-hander defeated Spain’s Pablo Andujar 6-4, 6-4 to register a second straight straight sets win in the tournament.

On Wednesday, in the first round, Delbonis had beaten Juan Martín del Potro 6-1, 6-3 in the opening round.

Ranked No. 42 in the world, Delbonis had come into the tournament having lost the last four matches. However, he is back to winning ways at home and improved his 2022 record to 4-4 after Thursday’s victory over Andujar.

Delbonis dominated the contest from the start, breaking the Spaniard once in each set, while saving all four break points that he faced in the match.

A clay court, specialist, Delbonis will be contesting in the quarterfinals for the first time since his semifinal exit from Hamburg in July last year.

Fognini v Delbonis Prediction and Tip

Delbonis won their last encounter at the French Open in 2021. And that was a straight sets rout. He will look to take confidence from that contest. Expect a good match, with the Argentine edging past the Italian in three sets.
