Tomas Machac v Roman Safiullin Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between Machac, who is 21-years old, and his Russian opponent, three years his senior.

Machac’s Bright Start to 2022

Machac has made a bright start to the year.

He began it by winning a Challenger event in Australia. And, the following week, he qualified for the Australian Open for a second successive year, where he went on to beat Juan Manuel Cerundulo of Argentina in the first round, before losing to the American Maxime Cressy in the second.

His exploits in Australia helped him reach a career high singles ranking, and now he is building on that in Marseille, where again he came through the qualifying competition, to meet another qualifier, Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia, in the first round on Tuesday.

Machac initially struggled, and dropped the first set for the gain of just one game. However, he hit back to claim the second, and dominated the third to claim his place in the second round.

Safiuulin Saves Match Point to Reach Second Round

Safiullin’s year began at the ATP Cup, where he was drafted in to partner Daniil Medvedev, and performed creditably, winning two out of his four singles matches, against much higher ranked players.

He was knocked out in the third round of qualifying for the Australian Open, but still earned a place in the main draw as a lucky loser.  He then, however, lost to the Slovak player, Alex Molcan, in four sets.

Since then, he has been in France, losing his first round match matches in Challenger events in Quimper and Cherbourg, which were sandwiched by a failed bid to qualify for Montpellier.

He has had better fortune in Marseille, coming through qualifying to earn a first round match-up with the world number 66, Alexei Popyrin, of Australia.

It was a close contest, Popyrin taking the first set on a tie-break, before one break of serve was enough for Safiullin to level the match after the second.

Safiullin had to save a match point in the third set, but, having done so, proved to be the stronger player in the subsequent tie-break, converting his fourth match point.

Machac v Safiullin Prediction and Tip

One of these men is guaranteed to make the quarter-finals, which will be a first for either of them in a senor ATP event.

By dint of his recent form and higher world ranking, Machac will start the favourite, though.
