Norrie Extends Winning Streak

Last week’s Delray Beach Open champion Cameron Norrie has extended his winning streak in Acapulco as he marched into the quarterfinals of the tournament with a three-set win over John Isner on Wednesday.

The World no. 12 withstood 27 aces from Isner, before rallying past the American 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-4. Norrie didn’t face a break point but converted two of six during the game. The British left-hander also won 85% of his first serve points.

The sixth seed had begun the tournament with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win over Germany’s Daniel Altmaier.

Wednesday’s win was Norrie’s eighth of the season and sixth in a row, a series of wins which began at the Delray Beach Open last week, when he went on to beat Reilly Opelka in the final to lift his third career title.

Norrie had a poor 0-4 start in Australia, but he struck form in Rotterdam, winning two and reaching the last eight. Into a third consecutive quarterfinal, can he keep the winning run going?

Luck Continues to Favour Gojowczyk

World No. 95 Peter Gojowczyk had lost in the second qualifying round to Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka, yet he found a place in the main draw as a lucky loser. The German got even luckier on Wednesday as his second round opponent compatriot Alexander Zverev was withdrawn from the Mexican Open for attacking the umpire’s chair with his racquet after losing a doubles match.

The incident happened after Zverev and partner Marcelo Melo lost against Harri Heliovaara and Lloyd Glasspool in the Round of 16. The defending champion and World No. 3 Zverev had lost his cool when a point went the other way during the match tiebreak, which he felt should have gone in their favour. A furious Zverev struck the umpire’s chair multiple times after the match thus leading to his dismissal from the tournament.

Gojowczyk gained from Zverev’s withdrawal as he now finds himself in the quarterfinals, having won just one match in the main draw. That win came against Brandon Nakashima in the first round on Tuesday. The German, who won the first qualifying round, against Gerardo López Villaseñor and lost to Nishioka in the second qualifier, had beaten the American 6-4, 6-4 for his first main draw win of the season.

The 32-year-old had a 0-5 start to the tournament and had not even won a set in the first five tournaments, but has now reached the last eight for the first time since reaching the semifinals in Metz last year.
