Sloane Stephens started her week in Guadalajara with a straight-set win over the Czech teenager Brenda Fruhvirtová. The two-time Grand Slam finalist needed just 58 minutes to tame the 14-year-old with 6-2, 6-2.
This marks the first time this season that has bagged a WTA win. Her last (and sole) tournament of 2022 was the Australian Open where she fell to Emma Raducanu in the opener in three sets.
Stephens has had a hard time on the tour for the better part of the last two seasons. Once a top 10 player, she has now dropped to the #57 position in the ranking. Her best results last year include reaching the semifinal in Emilia-Romagna, a quarterfinal in Charleston, and the fourth-round in the French Open.
Needless to say, the 28-year-old hasn’t tasted any real success in quite some time but has got a good opportunity in Guadalajara to make amends for it.

Paquet downs Masarova
Chloe Paquet defeated the Spanish qualifier Rebecca Masarova 7-5, 7-5 to reach round two. Interestingly, this is the first time that she has reached this round on the WTA Tour since her quarterfinal stint in Latvia in July 2019.
Since then, the Frenchwoman has spent most of her time competing on the ITF circuit where she has had some success. While she did participate in upper-tier events, her campaign was stopped abruptly in the openers.
The 27-year-old won four ITF titles last season while in 2022, her best performance came in ITF Grenoble where she reached the quarterfinal. Paquet also featured in Adelaide and Melbourne but couldn’t make it past the first round.
Stephens v Paquet Prediction and Tip
Stephens is a former world number three with an enviable pedigree and a commanding skillset. Barring her form woes, she should do well to dispatch a player of Paquet’s calibre in no time and reach the quarters.
That said, Stephens is still a bit vulnerable and Paquet can smell blood. She will eye her chances but will need to bring her best foot forward.
