Iga Swiatek v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

Sakkari holds an impressive 3-0 lead over Swiatek, picking all the wins in 2021 in straight sets. Her last victory came in the WTA Finals where Sakkari prevailed 6-2, 6-4.

Third Semifinal for Swiatek

Iga Swiatek is set to compete in her third semifinal of the season. In her last two stints – coming in Adelaide 1 and the Australian Open, the 20-year-old Pole was stopped in her tracks but this time, she will hope to go further.

Of course, it is easier said than done – especially when facing an opponent who has a psychological advantage.

Nonetheless, No. 8 ranked Swiatek is in fine form this year and can do well to turn that around. So far in Doha, the number seven seed has taken care of Viktorija Golubic, Daria Kasatkina, and Aryna Sabalenka.

Her win over the World No. 2 Sabalenka was quite impressive; she needed just an hour and 15 minutes to outdo the Belarusian with 6-2, 6-3. That said, Sabalenka was also undone by her own shoddy play, having won just 41% of the points behind the first service.

Sakkari Schools Gauff

Yet to drop a set in Doha, number six seed Maria Sakkari has defeated Ann Li, Jessica Pegula, and Cori Gauff en route to the semifinal. Gauff was beaten 6-3, 6-3 in 86 minutes; Sakkari on her part won six games in a row and lost her service just once.

The Greek will now play in her second semifinal of the season. Her last such stint was in St. Petersburg where she reached the final round but fell to Anett Kontaveit. Prior to that, she played in the Australian Open where she succumbed in the round of 16 to Jessica Pegula.

As the current world number six, Sakkari is not that much ahead of Swiatek on the tour. And while she lacks a Grand Slam trophy, she has more than made up for it with some impeccable consistency.

Sakkari v Swiatek Prediction and Tip

Swiatek has been largely difficult to beat. Looking at her last 10 defeats on the tour, they have all come at the hands of either former or current top 10 players. Sakkari has been in a somewhat similar form albeit, she has been better in bigger events than the lower-tier ones.

Between the two, it is difficult to call a favourite. Both players are known to be aggressive and have powerful serves. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if this goes to three sets.
