Pedro Martinez v Sebastian Baez Head to Head

These two tennis players played last year in Zagreb with Baez winning the match in 3 sets 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Consistency Paying off for Martinez

Pedro Martinez will most likely never be a top 10 player yet the Spaniard is showing a baseline level of tennis that is good enough for the top 100. Clay has emerged as his best surface which is no surprise but the Spaniard is showing a very solid level of mental toughness.

Many of his matches this week in Santiago have been very tricky to navigate. He was down 5-7 0-3 against Alejandro Tabilo in the semifinal but rallied back to win that match in three sets. Generally, he has played rather well on clay this year with a 6-3 record.

Now he has a chance to turn that into his maiden ATP trophy in Santiago. Martinez played in a final before but lost it. He will get another chance at the trophy against Baez who defeated him in the only previous match they played. Can the ever-consistent Martinez pull through? Keep reading to find out.

Sign of Things to Come for Baez

Sebastian Baez has been upping his level on clay for the entirety of the Golden Slam. The Argentine has a 9-3 record on the surface and with a 5-4 record on hard courts, it’s a pretty strong indicator that he is constantly improving. At the young age of 22, it’s not a surprise but it’s not a guarantee either.

Baez ha flashed his potential last year and it became quickly apparent that he is destined to claim on the rankings. How far can his potential take him remains to be seen but his attacking playstyle can be dangerous on many surfaces.

The Argentine defeated some strong opposition en route to the final and he will have a solid chance here as well. He should be more tired than Martinez as he had to play two very long and gruelling matches in the previous two rounds. Will that be too much to overcome?

Martinez v Baez Prediction and Tip

So this is a very tricky matchup to call because realistically both can win. I would not be schoked to see either win that maiden trophy that they both desperately want. Both have played well and on clay you just can’t ever know between two fairly equal players.

Baz plays more aggressively generally and Santiago tends to be rewarding to that type of play but Martinez is more than capable of countering that. He has both power and precision, he can move well and he is willing to play long rallies.

One factor that might come into play is tiredness. Both played long matches in the previous round with Baez taking 2,5 hours and Martinez over 3 hours to move to the final. Both will the effects of those which makes me think this will be a 3 setter. I’m learning Martinez on the winning side but I do think that it’s going to go 3 either way.

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
