Cirstea Made Fourth Round in Melbourne

After several years in the doldrums, Cirstea had something of a return to form in 2021, winning the Istanbul Cup in April, and finishing runner-up in Strasbourg to Barbora Krejcikova.

And she has carried that over into 2022, reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open for the second time, beating Petra Kvitova in the process, before losing to Iga Świątek in three sets.

Since then, she has reached the second round in St. Petersburg before losing to the in-form Anett Kontaveit, and last week she reached the same stage in Doha, beaten this time by Garbine Muguruza.

Rare Main Draw Appearance for Bolkvadze

The highlight of Bolkvadze’s career so far was coming through qualifying to make the first round of the US Open in 2019.

Apart from that her time is spent predominantly on the ITF circuit, where she has appeared in 13 singles finals, winning six of them.

Her most recent final came in Loughborough, England in January, when  she had to retire injured against Sofia Nami Samavati of Denmark.

This is a rare appearance for her in the main draw of a WTA event and she has got to this stage by beating Despina Papamichail of Greece and then Mai Hontama of Japan.
