Leylah Fernandez v Beatriz Haddad Maia Head to Head
This will be a first meeting between the two.
Fernandez Advances With Late-Night Victory
A match that was suppose to take place on Friday evening began well beyond 12 AM Saturday, thanks to the three epic quarterfinals that preceded it. The wait would have been a bit upsetting for both players, but not so much for Leylah Fernandez who knocked out China’s Wang Qiang in straight sets to stay on course to defend her title in Monterrey.
The 2021 champion is now one-win away from another final in the Mexican city. The World No. 21 didn’t have a great start, having been broken twice in the first three games of the match, but she soon found her footing, sending the set back on serve. The 2021 U.S. Open finalist dominated the tiebreak though to claim the first set. She also got the only break of the second set in the fifth game and then maintained the lead to close out the match 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
With the win, the Canadian improved to 4-2 for the season. She had begun the tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 drubbing of Anna Karolína Schmiedlová and then laboured to a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) win against another Chinese Qinwen Zheng.
Fernandez’s only WTA title came in Monterrey last year when she beat Viktorija Golubic in the final. On Saturday, the 19-year-old lefty will be looking to reach a first final since her runner-up finish against Emma Raducanu at the U.S. Open.
Haddad Maia Saves Three MPs to Beat Bouzkova
Beatriz Haddad Maia saved three match points in a stunning come-from-behind quarterfinal win over the Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova on Friday.
The Brazilian left-hander, who finished runner-up at the Australian Open women’s doubles event this year, bounced back from a set down to outlast the World No. 81, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) in a three-hour-and-22 minute contest.
The World No. 69 saved 15 of 19 break points and converted four of seven in a nail-biting contest. Down a set and down a break in the second, Haddad Maia refused to surrender as she began her fightback from 2-4 down in the second set. She won four successive games to force the decider. Both exchanged a break in the middle of the third set eventually taking the set to the tiebreak. Bouzkova dominated the early part of tiebreak, getting two mini breaks and racing to a 3-6 lead, but the Brazilian made another remarkable recovery, saving all three match points. The momentum shifted and the Brazilian advanced with an epic victory.
Haddad Maia had also taken three sets to win her first round match against Panna Udvardy, fighting back from a set down to beat the Hungarian 1-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Her second round outing was an easier one, when she breezed past China’s Wang Xinyu 6-2, 6-2.
Haddad Maia had won just one main draw match in 2022 before the tournament, winning her opening round contest at the Australian Open, but she was far more impressive in doubles at the opening major, reaching her first Grand Slam final, along with partner Anna Danilina. Can the 2017 Korea Open runner-up reach a second WTA Final with a win on Saturday?
Fernandez v Haddad Maia Prediction and Tip
The defending champion will be the favourite to win this contest. Expect her to advance with a straight sets win.
