Eugenie Bouchard has been declared the winner of the 2018 Female Player of the Year and Singles Player of the Year by Tennis Canada.
Bouchard apart, Gabriela Dabrowski won the Doubles Player of the Year, Rebecca Marino clinched the Most Improved Player while Leylah Annie Fernandez was the Junior Player of the Year announced on Wednesday.
This is the fifth time in six years that Bouchard has won this prestigious award and this is despite the Canadian having finished the year ranked 87th on the WTA Rankings.
She is the number one Canadian player in the women’s singles category though with the next best Bianca Andreescu, ranked 153rd in the world. Incidentally, Bianca Andreescu had won the award in 2017, the only year in the last six Bouchard didn’t win it.

And while her rankings do not do justice to the talent she had shown when she had made it to the 2014 Wimbledon final where she lost to Petra Kvitova, Bouchard did show signs of some of that form returning towards the end of the season.
Bouchard made it to the Luxembourg Open semi-finals after needing to feature in the qualifiers, having also reached the semi-finals at the WTA Gstaad.
She was ranked 194th in the world but returned back to the top 100 by year end which should help Bouchard make a direct entry into the first major of the new season, the Australian Open.

The Canadian male player of the year will be announced on Thursday, December 13. Milos Raonic had won it six times in a row between 2011 and 2016 before Denis Shapovalov clinched it last year.
