Karolina Pliskova masterminded an impressive turnaround to enter the fourth round of the US Open on Saturday but Jelena Ostapenko was sent packing.

Things did not go as per plan for the world number one Pliskova before she turned it around in her third round win over over No.27 seed Zhang Shuai.

Down a match-point in the second set to Zhang, Pliskova escaped from the clutches of a sure defeat before winning 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Pliskova, who had dropped just two games in her opening round but needed a tough three-setter in round two of the US Open, was on the back-foot from the word go. It was only her grit and Zhang’s implosion in the end that allowed the Czech to come back into the encounter and make the fourth round.

It wasn’t as if Pliskova had been troubled by Zhang in the past, having won four successive times before this match. This included a 55-minute rout of Zhang at the Qatar Open but it was a different story at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Pliskova will now take on Jennifer Brady in the fourth round after the 22-year-old American made it through to her second round of 16 in Grand Slam tennis with a win over Monica Niculescu. She won in three gruelling sets, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 to enter her second Grand Slam fourth round.

Meanwhile French Open champion Ostapenko was sent crashing by Daria Kasaktina in her third round match. Kasaktina won 6-3, 6-2 and will now face qualifier Kaia Kanepi for a place in the quarter-finals.

In some of the other women’s third round matches, 20th seeded Coco Vandeweghe ousted the tenth seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, winning in three sets to extend her poor run at Grand Slams.

Radwanska, once ranked second in the world, hasn’t reached the fourth round of Grand Slams since the 2016 Australian Open. She has made the final of Wimbledon once, way back in 2012.

Vandeweghe takes on Lucie Safarova in the fourth round after having eased past Kurumi Nara in straight sets.
