Gasquet Returning After Three-Year Gap

A semifinalist in 2013, Richard Gasquet returns to Miami after a gap of three years. He last featured in 2018 i what was his 10th appearance but lost in the second round of the tournament.

Gasquet brings a 4-4 season record to the tournament. A 15-time winner on the tour, Gasquet was a quarterfinalist in Montpellier this year. He also won his first round matches at the Australian and Marseille Opens, but made a first round exit from Indian Wells after being handed a tough three-set defeat by Germany’s Oscar Otte.

The 35-year-old, last week featured at the Phoenix Challenger, winning the first two rounds but falling to Denis Kudla in the last eight stage.

So overall, Gasquet has blown hot and cold this year. And that’s been the case over the last one year, which has also resulted in him sliding down the rankings. A runner-up in Umag last year, the Frenchman will be looking to regain that sort of form. But he faces a tough opponent first up, and may find it difficult to advance into the second round.

Kokkinakis Storms Into the Main Draw

Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis made quick work of two Italians to reach the main draw in Miami. The World No. 97 ousted Thomas Fabbiano 6-1, 6-3 in the first qualifying round and then breezed past Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-4 to reach the Miami main draw for a fourth time in his career.

The 25-year-old Aussie has enjoyed a terrific run this season. He was a semifinalist at the season opener in Adelaide-1 and then captured his maiden ATP title in Adelaide-2. Kokkinakis also claimed his first doubles title at a Grand Slam, winning the Australian Open title along with Nick Kyrgios.

Having struggled with injuries over the last few years, Kokkinakis is finally making an impression this season. He qualified for the Indian Wells Open as well, but fell to Sebastian  Korda in the first round. His best in Miami is a third round appearance in 2018 and that run included a stunning upset of top seed and defending champion Roger Federer in the second round. He will be reminding himself of that performance, when he came back from a set down to score the biggest win of his career.

Bringing in a 9-5 season record, Kokkinakis comes into the tournament with much more confidence than last year, when he lost in the second round to Marton Fucsovics.

Gasquet v Kokkinakis Prediction and Tip

It’s only March and Kokkinakis has already won a maiden ATP title, a doubles Grand Slam title and also broken back into the top 100. He will be hungry for more success and will hope to start well in Miami. The Aussie should win a close three-set opener against Gasquet and set up a second round meeting with the 13th seed Diego Schwartzman.
