Badosa on a Roll

World No. 6 Paula Badosa has been thriving on the hard courts in the US this month. Following a stellar run in the BNP Paribas Open, the Spaniard has delivered yet another inspiring run – this time in Miami.

In her career, she had never made it past the second round here but this, she has made up for it with a quarterfinal showing.

The fifth-seeded Badosa started in round two with a straight-set win over Marie Bouzkova. She has continued in the same vein with comfortable triumphs over the lesser-ranked Yulia Putintseva and the rising Czech teenager Linda Fruhvirtová – losing just five games to the two.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a similar run in Indian Wells too; she dispatched Tereza Martincova, Sara Sorribes Tormo, Leylah Fernandez, and Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets to reach the semis. Badosa ultimately lost to Maria Sakkari.

Nonetheless, she has had a pretty superb year so far with a title run in Sydney 500 and a mid-round appearance at the Australian Open.

Pegula Redeems Herself

Since reaching the quarterfinal at the Australian Open in January, World No. 21 Jessica Pegula had the misfortune of incurring early defeats in her next three tournaments.

Two of those can be excused seeing that they came at the hands of top 10 players like Maria Sakkari and Ons Jabeur, but the first-round loss to Marie Bouzkova in Tennis Paradise was a bitter pill to swallow.

Now over the last week in Miami, the American has redeemed herself with another final-eight run. In her wake, she has left behind some big names like Sloane Stephens and Elena Rybakina – all without losing a set.

In the round of 16, Pegula benefited further with a second-set retirement of Anhelina Kalinina due to fitness concerns. Already up 6-0, she wrapped an early play.

While there is no doubt about Pegula’s ability as a tennis player, she is not the most consistent player on the circuit. Before her breakthrough run in Melbourne, she had fallen in the first round in her preceding two events.

Badosa v Pegula Prediction and Tip

In some ways, Badosa and Pegula are quite well-matched. Although Badosa has got a superior pedigree, Pegula did reach the final stages in several WTA 1000 events last season – the Indian Wells Open, WTA Dubai, Canadian Open, and Italian Open.

But for her to beat a player who is running hot on momentum is going to need a lot more. Nonetheless, she can fight back. Badosa will start as the favourite and will likely find herself in a demanding match.
