This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Swiatek Aiming for a Rare Sunshine Doubles

Following the shock retirement of Ashleigh Barty from professional tennis, World No. 2 Iga Swiatek is set to become the top-ranked player on WTA Tour when the new rankings are released on Monday.

Even if that weren’t the case, it was just a matter of time for the 20-year-old Pole before reached the number one spot. Her record for the year – including her heroics in the Miami Open – stands at 23-3 with two singles titles (Indian Wells and WTA Doha) and two semifinal feats in Australian tournaments.

Swiatek has simply swept aside her competition in great style, dispatching the likes of Maria Sakkari, Aryna Sabalenka, Simona Halep, Anett Kontaveit, Madison Keys, and Angelique Kerber in the last couple of months.

Here in Miami, the number two seed has continued in the same vein and dismissed Viktorija Golubic, Madison Brengle, and Cori Gauff in straight sets, without breaking a sweat.

Three more wins and Swiatek becomes only the fourth woman to have achieved a Sunshine Doubles; Victoria Azarenka did it last in 2016. In all fairness, her prospects are looking quite good. She is in great form, playing the best tennis already of her young career, and has been notoriously difficult to beat.

Kvitova Seeking Big Wins

Former world number two Petra Kvitova is now ranked #32 on the tour – the lowest she has found herself in the singles ranking since 2017 when she dropped down to the #29 spot.

Her form has dropped gradually over the last couple of seasons owing to a lack of concrete results. She has bagged only one singles title in the last couple of seasons while in 2021, the Czech could not move past the third round in the Grand Slams.

Kvitova had to settle for early exits in a majority of her recent events; this year alone, the 32-year-old lost early in Melbourne, Sydney, St. Petersburg, Doha, and Indian Wells.

In the Miami Open, the two-time Wimbledon champion may have benefited from an easy draw. She defeated Clara Burel, Lauren Davis, and Veronika Kudermetova with ease to reach the quarterfinal. The question now remains if she can deliver the same result against Swiatek.

Kvitova v Swiatek Prediction and Tip

Swiatek will start as the heavy favourite but Kvitova is fairly well experienced and has a superior pedigree to help her get through. While it may be difficult for her to beat the Pole in straight sets, she will likely put up a good fight and give Swiatek a run for her money.
