Querrey in Woeful Touch

Two-time finalist Sam Querrey has a very good in Houston but is not in the best of forms at the moment. The 34-year-old American has won just one of the six matches he has played this year and that includes a qualifying round loss at the Miami Open.

Querrey’s only win this year came over Tallon Griekspoor in the first round at Indian Wells.

A 10-time champion on the tour, the 2017 Wimbledon semifinalist did reach a 20th career final in Mallorca last year, but apart from that and a semifinal run in Stuttgart (both grass court events) he struggled to win matches on hard and clay courts.

In Houston, Querrey has a 17-10 record. He finished runner-up to Juan Ignacio Chela in 2010 and fell to Jack Sock in the final in 2015. In his last appearance in the tournament in 2019, he fell in the semifinals.

Interestingly he has not won a match on clay since losing the 2019 Houston Open semifinal to Cristian Garin. Not that he has played much on the surface but has exited the first round whenever he has played on the surface, thus he will be eager to end the long drought.

Galan Was a Semifinalist on Debut in 2019

Daniel Elahi Galan doesn’t bring a great tour-level form into the tournament, but he has played a lot this year, including Challenger and qualifying rounds.

A better player on clay than on hard courts, Galan was a finalist at the Concepción Challenger earlier this season. The 25-year-old Colombian also made it to the quarterfinals in Cordoba having qualified for the tournament as a lucky loser. The two wins in Cordoba are his only wins from five tour-level matches this year.

In his only appearance in Houston in 2019, Galan came through the qualifiers and then continued the winning momentum until he was beaten by Casper Ruud in the semifinals.

The Colombian will be looking to repeat that performance again this year, as the Houston Open returns after the pandemic-induced cancellations over the last two years.

Querrey v Galán Prediction and Tip

Querrey’s form particularly on clay courts hasn’t been great and he has not played much as well. In contrast Galan has been doing well on the surface. He was also a semifinalist in Santiago last year. So expect the Colombian to start with a win and advance for a Round of 16 meeting with the top seed Casper Ruud.
