John Isner v Steve Johnson Head to Head

The pair have played each other ten times before, and Johnson leads their head to head series by six matches to four.

Johnson won their first match in Washington in 2014, but Isner won their next four encounters. However, since winning again in Washington in 2016, Johnson remains unbeaten against Isner, their most recent encounter coming at the US Open in 2020.

Johnson Beats Compatriot Kudla

Johnson came to Texas not in the best of form, after recent struggles had seem him drop out of the top 100.

He will, therefore, take some comfort from beating another American, Denis Kudla, the world number 81 in the first round, even though there was nothing particularly aesthetic about the victory.

One break of serve was enough to give him the first set, but Kudla was able to respond with a  break of his own in the second and the match went to a third.

Johnson, though, secured another break midway through the deciding set, and did not drop a point on his own serve after that.  For a clay court match, serve had been unusually dominant.

2013 Houston Winner Isner Kick-Starts Proceedings

Although clay does not suit the Isner game because it robs his serve of some of its potency, he has had a good record in the past in this Championship, finishing runner-up in 2012, and winning it in 2013.

That remains his one senior tournament win on clay.

His best result of the year so far came in Dallas, where he reached the semi-final, and, as a footnote, ended-up losing the longest tie-break in history in his defeat to Reilly Opelka.

He also made the fourth round in Indian Wels, but would have been disappointed by losing first time out in Miami, beaten in straight sets by the French player, Hugo Gaston, the world number 63.

The American was given a first round bye in Houston this time.

Isner v Johnson Prediction and Tip

Johnson may have the superior head to head record, but Isner is in the better recent form and he is a past winner in Houston, which gives him a psychological edge.
