Tomljanovic Into Season’s First Quarterfinal

Ajla Tomljanovic has reached a first quarterfinal of the season after her second round opponent Lesia Tsurenko retired while trailing 4-6, 0-1.

The 28-year-old Australian, who had beaten compatriot Jaimee Fourlis 6-1, 6-3 in the first round, had a slow start in the Round of 16 match on Thursday as she lost her first two service games with the match starting with three consecutive break of serves. But the World no. 41 found her range as the set progressed and took the set by winning four consecutive games.

Seeded no. 6th in the tournament, the 28-year-old Tomljanovic had come into the tournament with a poor 6-9 record, but will be happy to have reached the last eight in Istanbul.

This is her third appearance in Istanbul and only the first time that she has reached this far. A four-time finalist on the tour, Tomljanovic reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon last year. She hasn’t reached another quarterfinal since her defeat to Ash Barty in the last eight at Wimbledon.

Putintseva Powers Past Peterson

World No. 51 Yulia Putintseva needed just an hour and 15 minutes to knock out Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson in the Round of 16 on Thursday.

This is the first time that the Kazakh player has won two main draw matches in a row this season as a result of which she too will be featuring in the quarterfinals for the first time in 2022.

A three-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist, Putintseva last reached a quarterfinal in Astana in October last year, when she went on to reach a fifth WTA final, but couldn’t add to her two titles. Both of her WTA title have come on clay and two of her major quarterfinal appearances have also come on clay at the French Open.

The 27-year-old had begun the tournament with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win over Magda Linette in the first round.

She continued her winning run in the second round on Thursday as she overpowered Peterson 6-2, 6-0. Interestingly, the Swede didn’t win a single service game in the match. Putintseva won five of seven service games and all seven return games to ease into the quarterfinals.

Tomljanovic v Putintseva Prediction and Tip
