Kudermetova Handed a Walkover

Veronika Kudermetova didn’t have to take the court for her second round match as her opponent Ana Bogdan of Romania had to withdraw even before the start of the match due to an injury.

As a result Kudermetova reached the quarterfinals despite winning just one match in the tournament so far. That win came over Marina Melnikova. Kudermetova converted five of 14 break points and saved all three to beat Melnikova 6-2, 6-0 in just an hour and 14 minutes.

It has been a very good year for the world No. 29 so far as she has already featured in two finals, finishing runner-up to Simona Halep in Melbourne and to Jelena Ostapenko in Dubai. She also had a quarterfinals finish in Indian Wells and was in the round of 16 in Miami. This will be her fourth quarterfinal of the season and she will be hoping to reach the semis for the third time.

The 24-year-old had also reached two finals last year, winning her maiden title in Charleston. A good player on all surfaces, Kudermetova is playing on clay for the first time this season and has a 66% win record on the surface.

Bondar Eases Past Parrizas-Diaz

Facing Kudermetova will be World No. 72 Anna Bondar of Hungary who marched into the last eight with a straight sets win over Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz on Thursday.

Bondar, who was also a quarterfinalist in Lyon, needed 76 minutes to dispatch the World no. 54, 6-4, 6-2. After holding serves for the first four games, both players exchanged two breaks each over the next four games, before Bondar edged ahead with a fifth consecutive break of the set. She held serve in the next game to take a one-set lead.

The Hungarian dominated the second set with two breaks of serve to complete the win and advance to the second quarterfinal of the season.

Bondar had begun her campaign with a 6-4, 7-5 win over the Czech Republic’s Tereza Martincová. With the two wins she has improved her season record to 11-9 from all matches at all levels.
