Sorana Cirstea v Veronika Kudermetova Head to Head

Cirstea has won both their previous meetings with the most recent win coming at the U.S. Open last year.

Cirstea Ends Grabher’s Run

Second seed Sorana Cirstea is two wins away from defending her Istanbul title after she ousted Austria’s Julia Grabher in the quarterfinal on Friday.

The Romanian was off to a slow start, dropping serve in the very first game of the match and had to come back from a break down twice in the set. One of those breaks came when Grabher served for the set at 4-5. Cirstea held serve the next game and then broke for a third time to take the first set.

Having ended the first set by winning four consecutive games, she started the second by winning the first two games. The World No. 194 did manage to hold serve on one occasion, but Cirstea was so dominant in the second that she broke her opponent two more times in the set to register a 7-5, 6-1 victory.

Cirstea, who defeated Kamilla Rakhimova 6-4, 6-1 in the first round, rebounded to beat Arantxa Rus 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 in the second round on Wednesday.

Following Friday’s win, Cirstea improved to 14-8 in 2022. This will be a second semifinal appearance for the World no. 24 this year, after her last four finish in Lyon.

Kudermetova Battles Past Bondar

Veronika Kudermetova battled past Hungary’s Anna Bondar in a two-hour-and-17-minute quarterfinal on Friday.

After both players broke each other twice in the first set, it headed for a tiebreak. Kudermetova saved four set points in the tiebreak, before converting her only set point to take the first set.

The second set, too, needed a tiebreak to separate the two after both players broke each other twice. But this time Kudermetova was in complete control, ending the Hungarian’s resistance with a 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-3) victory.

A two-time finalist this season, Kudermetova is now one win away from a third final.

She had begun the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Marina Melnikova and then got a walkover in the second round after her opponent Ana Bogdan of Romania withdrew due to an injury.

The world No. 29 finished runner-up to Simona Halep in Melbourne and to Jelena Ostapenko in Dubai earlier this season. She also had a quarterfinals finish in Indian Wells and was in the round of 16 in Miami.

The 24-year-old had also reached two finals last year, winning her maiden title in Charleston. A good player on all surfaces, Kudermetova is playing on clay for the first time this season and has a 66% win record on the surface.

Cirstea v Kudermetova Prediction and Tip
