Sebastian Baez proved last year that he is a bit more than just a talented youngster. Taking one of the spots at the Next Gen Finals he proved he can play amongst the best young players in the world. He took a step forward this year playing strong tennis in several events.
The record is 18-13 and most of those wins came on clay. He arrived in Estoril after solid showings in both Monte-Carlo and Barcelona but he found his stroke in Estoril. Round 1 win over Souza was a good warm-up for him and he continued that against Marin Cilic coming back to win that match after losing the first set 1-6.
Baez is an attacking player who rarely shies away from it and he certainly is playing that way in Portugal this week. He will have a chance to attack plenty against Gasquet but he will need to be smart about it as that backhand is firing hot all week long.

Gasquet Not Done Yet
Richard Gasquet is up there in age yet the Frenchman is far from done. He showed quite a strong game last year on clay taking a set off of Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros and he certainly playing well on the surface this year as well. He’s 4-2 on clay so far, with an overall 10-8 record on the year.
In Estoril, it’s been a fight against some tricky players but it’s been wins. Round one against Tommy Paul was very physical but the American simply could not figure out how to deal with Gasquet who knows all the tricks. Next round he faced Hugo Dellien, a strong clay player who prefers to play very long rallies.
It was a long match where Gasquet trailed early but he rallied to win the first in the tiebreak and then cruised in the second. Something similar will happen against Baez as well so he will need to be equally focused.
Baez v Gasquet Prediction and Tip
So this is a very interesting matchup between two players who might deliver a classic. Baez is the stronger clay player as he practically grew up on the surface but he will need to be pretty focused against Gasquet. The Frenchman will make him work for every point and he can defend well.
Baez covers the court well but his shorter stature makes him prone to be beaten with a combination of variety and attacking. Gasquet will know that and should have some good success with that approach. Overall I think this might go three but I don’t think Gasquet is able to handle it physically.
Baez is strong, really strong and he has shown a lot of belief in his play so far this week. I don’t see him getting rattled against Gasquet.
