Albert Ramos-Vinolas v Sebastian Baez Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, with both matches taking place this year. Baez won in four sets at the Australian Open, and then in three sets in the semi-finals in Santiago two months ago.

Defending Champion Ramos-Vinolas Beats Veteran Compatriot

Ramos-Vinolas, the defending champion in Estoril, faced compatriot and veteran Fernando Verdasco,  the world 116, a man who reached the final in Portugal 11 years ago, in Friday’s quarter-final.

Both men had to save early breaks, but then Verdasco dropped his serve in successive games,  and Ramos-Vinolas was able to cruise through the rest of the first set, with no further pressure put on his own serve.

The second set followed a similar pattern, except that the number six seed was even more dominant on serve and the return. It was not long before Verdasco buckled under the pressure, dropped his serve not once but twice, leaving Ramos-Vinolas with the simple task of serving out for the match.

Baez Comes from Behind to Beat Gasquet

It was Baez’s form on clay on the Challenger tour in 2021 that earned him a place in the NextGen ATP finals in Milan.

And he picked up where he left off by reaching his first ATP final at the Chile Open in February.

Now he is in yet another clay court semi-final after a come from behind win against Richard Gasquet of France, the world number 80, in their quarter-final on Friday.

Baez began the match slowly, dropped his opening service game and then found himself two breaks down.

He recovered one of them and saved four set points, but Gasquet was able to convert the fifth.

But then the momentum of the match shifted midway through the second set when the Argentine broke his French opponent and then again, and soon it was all-square again.

The pair exchanged breaks at the start of the third set, but then, at four games all, Baez secured the all-important break, setting up the opportunity to serve out.

Ramos-Vinolas v Baez Prediction and Tip

Given that Baez has won both of their previous matches this year, including on the clay of Santiago, he will start the favourite.
