Jessica Pegula v Kaia Kanepi Head to Head

No previous matches have been played between Pegula and Kanepi before this match in Madrid.

Pegula Struggles Past Giorgi

Pegula was 1/2 to win her opener against Camila Giorgi but was driven into a hard-fought three-setter before she came away with the victory.

In a match lasting two hours and 39 minutes, Pegula won 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 to seal her second round berth against Kanepi.

Interestingly, both Pegula and Giorgi helped themselves to four breaks of serves but it was the American who got them when they really mattered. They came in the 11th game of the opening set and the ninth and 11th of the final set to help Pegula clinch it.

The world number 14 was down a match-point on Giorgi’s serve in the final set and frittered away seven break-points before levelling things out. A rattled Giorgi was then broken again following that, allowing Pegula to march forward.

This win follows Pegula’s third round exit at Charleston, the only other clay court competition she had played before this one.

Qualifier Kanepi on Bit of a Roll

She is 36 years old but Kanepi’s recent form has made many wonder if she has still a few years of competitive tennis left in her.

Already this season, the Estonian player has made the quarterfinal at Australian Open – which included wins over Angelique Kerber and Aryna Sabalenka – and in the three tournaments that followed, has won successive matches at each of them.

The last of these three came in Charleston earlier this month where Kanepi edged past Shelby Rogers and Magdalena Frech before losing Magda Linette in the third.

Here, Kanepi has already gotten past Harriet Dart and Martina Trevisan in the qualifiers before cruising past Linda Fruhvirotva in the opener. Can she continue with that momentum against a player who takes her time on this surface?

Pegula v Kanepi Prediction and Tip

It could get down to be an intriguing contest with Pegula holding a slight edge. Three sets in the match expected for this one.
