A hand injury kept Karolina Pliskova out of the tour in the early part of the season, but her return hasn’t been encouraging.
The World No. 6 has won just two matches this season. Those two wins came against Katarina Zavatska in the first round of the Charleston Open and over Petra Kvitova in the first round in Stuttgart.
But since that win over Kvitova, Pliskova lost three straight matches. Liudmilla Samsonova defeated her in the second round in Stuttgart, while Marie Bouzkova and Jil Teichmann knocked her out in the opening rounds in Madrid and Rome respectively.
Overall, the 30-year-old is 2-6 this season. She is a good player on clay with a 60% win record on the surface and a 3-3 record on clay court finals.
The 16-time tour-level champion will be playing in Strasbourg for the second time. She lost in the opening round in 2013. Can she start off on a winning note?

Kostyuk Is 6-9 in 2022
World No. 59 Marta Kostyuk has done well in the qualifying rounds this season, but when it comes to the main draws, she has a 6-9 record.
The Ukrainian has won consecutive main draw matches just once this year and that was at the Australian Open, where the 19-year-old reached the third round for the second time in her career.
Kostyuk, who has a 50% win record on clay, has won just one main draw match on the surface this year. She won the opening round in Madrid against Clara Tauson, but lost in the second round to Emma Raducanu and then made a first round exit from Rome last week, falling to Madison Brengle.
This is Kostyuk’s second appearance in Strasbourg. On her debut in 2019, she entered the main draw through the qualifiers and then won two matched to reach the quarterfinals, before falling to Caroline Garcia.

Pliskova’s form hasn’t been good of late, but the top seed will be hoping to get into some sort of rhythm ahead of the French Open. She will be looking to start with a win against Kostyuk.
