Watson Struggles on Clay

Heather Watson is 12-12 from all her matches this season. But most of her wins have come in the qualifying rounds and she is 4-7 in the main events.

Most recently she appeared in the WTA 125 in Saint Malo, winning her opening round and losing in the second.

The 29-year-old Briton’s best performance this year was a third round appearance in Miami. She scored back-to-back comeback wins over Arantxa Rus and Elina Svitolina before falling to Belinda Bencic in the third round.

A four-time champion on the tour, clay isn’t Watson’s preferred surface. She will be playing in Strasbourg for the second time after falling in the opening round in 2016.

World No. 229 Else Jacquemot will be playing her second tour-level main draw match of the year on Monday. The 19-year-old French player had lost in the opening round in Lyon to Stefanie Voegele.

She is 18-11 from all competitions this season. This month Jacquemot has featured in two WTA 125K events. She won one and lost one in Saint Malo, but won two to reach the quarterfinals in Paris, before falling to Beatriz Haddad Maia in three.

The girls’ singles champion at Roland Garros in 2020, Jacquemot is a decent clay court player and could give Watson a tough fight on Monday.
