Pedro Martinez v Yosuke Watanuki Head to Head

Breakout Year for Martinez

Pedro Martinez has been a solid player for a while now but he’s clearly taken a step up this year both in his level and consistency. He is 13-11 on the year and 8-7 on clay. He’s all the way up to 40 in the ATP Rankings and that’s obviously the highest he’s ever been ranked.

Martinez is the typical Spanish player capable of playing well on all surfaces but plays best on clay. He has a solid all-around game and moves well on the surface. He will be the heavy favourite in this matchup simply because he is both a much better player and a better clay player.

Recent form has not been good as his last win happened in Monte-Carlo and since then he lost four matches in a row. Some of those were pretty close ones so it’s not like he’s playing terrible. He simply did not have luck with the draw but that changed here.

Rare ATP Event For Watanuki

Yosuke Watanuki mostly plays on the challenger Tour and sometimes he has a good result there. For the most part it’s been meh which is why the player from Japan is far from being ranked inside the top 100. Due to a weak field, Watanuki was accepted into the qualifying draw and he was able to win one match and lose the other.

That was good enough to get him inside the main draw but he drew Martinez and that’s trouble. He is 16-12 on the year and 4-3 on clay which is pretty solid from him. Historically he’s been pretty bad on clay and that’s likely not going to change.

His game is mostly dependent on his serve and that’s a no-go on clay. He will cherish this opportunity but a win is unlikely. Keep reading to find out why.

Martinez v Watanuki Prediction and Tip

Pedro Martinez is the heavy favourite in this matchup and the reason is simple. He is the better player and that’s usually enough to win the match. He is also the better clay player and I’d argue in the better form as well. I just don’t see how the Spaniard loses this one. Take Martinez, not much to add.

Tip: Martinez to win in straight sets: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
