Nikoloz Basilashvili v Joao Sousa Head to Head

The pair have played each other before, and that was on clay in Marrakech four years ago, Sousa winning in three sets.

Basilashvili Aided by Opponent’s Retirement

Basilashvili is another man who has been searching for his best form of late, and had failed  to get beyond the second round of any tournament he had entered, since losing in the final in Doha to Roberto-Batuista-Agut.

He has, at least managed to emulate that in Geneva, although there was also an element of luck involved in his progress.

Playing the Argentine Facundo Bagnis, the world number 98, he took an early grip on the match by breaking in the first game. Bagnis hit back to level, only to drop his won serve once more and Basilashvili was able to serve out to take the first set.

At that point Bagnis, who was carrying an injury, decided that he could not go on and retired, giving the Georgian the rest of the day off.

Sousa Beats Experienced Spaniard

Sousa, who won the Maharashtra Open in February, but had been struggling since the switch to clay, was given a tough looking first round draw in the form of the vastly experienced Spaniard, Pablo Andujar-Alba, the world number 83.

In the event he dealt with his challenge much better than he might have expected.

The tone was set in the second game of the match when the Spaniard dropped his serve. One more break gave Sousa the chance to serve out for the set.

When Sousa dropped his serve early in the second set, it looked like Andujar-Alba might be about to stage a comeback. But two successive breaks handed the advantage firmly back to the Portuguese, and, although the Spaniard saved a match point on his own serve, he was powerless to prevent Sousa serving out next game.

Basilashvili v Sousa Prediction and Tip

Neither man was in good form on clay prior to this tournament, and both will see this as a chance to gain some confidence ahead of the French Open. Sousa won their last match, but that was four years ago, and the odds may just favour the Georgian this time.
