Mertens Holds Off Friedsam

World No. 33 Elise Mertens registered another solid win in Strasbourg to march into the last eight of a tournament for the second time this season.

The Belgian, who is playing her first tournament since retiring with a leg injury in Istanbul, had begun her Strasbourg challenge with a 7-5, 6-4 win over France’s Carole Monnet.

She didn’t drop a set in the second round either but had to battle past Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam in a two hour and 21 minute contest.

The fourth seed, who began the match with a break of serve, had 16 breaking opportunities in the contest, but she could only take five of them. The 207th ranked Friedsam held eight break points, with Mertens saving five of them.

A six-time winner from 10 tour-level finals, Mertens will be playing in her second quarterfinal of the season. She had earlier reached the last eight in St. Petersburg but was sent packing by Maria Sakkari.

Juvan Continues to Dominate

After knocking out World No. 291 Lina Glushko of Israel in straight sets on Monday, Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan continued her dominating run on Wednesday as she ousted Bosnia and Herzagvina’s Nefisa Berberovic in the second round.

With the win over the World No. 306, the world no. 81 is into the quarterfinals for the second time this year following her last eight finish in Adelaide International-1.

While Juvan was broken twice by Glushko in the first round, she was broken just once by Berberovic in the second round on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old had broken the Israeli six times in the opener for a 6-3, 6-1 win, while she broke the Bosnian player four times for a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

She will now aim for a first semifinal since her final four appearance in Portoroz, Slovenia in September 2021.
