Schwartzman Shocked at Rome

His clay court exploits are well-known what with Schwartzman winning three of his four titles on the ATP circuit on the red dirt. The Argentine, however, isn’t coming off some great form.

At Rome, the tournament he last entered before travelling to Paris, Schwartzman was knocked out in the second round by Marcos Giron. Giron was a rank outsider going into the encounter, starting out as a 5/1 underdog.

Make no mistake though, Schwartzman’s record this season on clay has been a solid one again. He’s made it to two tournament finals on this surface and overall, despite that early Rome loss has a 16-7 win-loss stat.

He would have loved to do a lot better at Madrid where he was sent packing in the second round by Grigor Dimitrov but come the French Open, expect him to regain some of his old touch.

Struggling Kuznetsov Surprise Qualifier

Kuznetsov has been around on the circuit for a few years now but has been struggling to get a move on in recent times. And this year has been no different, causing the former world number 39 to fall to 227th in the world.

The Russian made it to the qualifier of the Quimper Challenger, starting out in the qualifying rounds there too but since then, in January this year, he has barely made a dent.

In fact, Kuznetsov was on a six-match losing streak before he won his opener at Zagreb and then again, went down to Mirza Basic.

Which is why in two of the three qualifying matches he featured in at French Open, Kuznetsov was a second favourite. And yet, the Russian used his experience to come through and seal his berth in the main draw of this competition.

This will be the first time Kuznetsov will feature at this stage in Roland-Garros since 2017. Doesn’t look like he holds too many aces though.
