Jasmine Paolini v Irina-Camelia Begu Head to Head
It’s advantage Begu with 2-1; the Romanian defeated Paolini as recently as the 2022 WTA Melbourne 2 in three sets.

World No. 55 Jasmine Paolini has lost her last two first-round matches on the tour. She isn’t in the best of form at the moment and may find herself battling Begu to earn the win.
In Madrid and Rome, she fell respectively to Ons Jabeur and Jil Teichmann while in Charleston, she managed to make it to round two before losing to Jessica Pegula.
The Italian has been beaten like this in the early stages of several tournaments this season, sans the Lyon Open where was a quarterfinalist (defeat to Dayana Yastremska). Paolini also reached round three in the Indian Wells Open after upsetting Katie Boulter and Aryna Sabalenka en route.
The 26-year-old has some pedigree on clay but she hasn’t quite managed to translate it into bigger wins. Last year, she reached the final in a couple of Challenger tournaments and has also got 12 ITF finals on the surface. Barring her inconsistency, she does make for a formidable clay opponent.

Begu, Bubbling with Experience and Rhythm
Irina-Camelia Begu has had a much better season than her Italian counterpart in 2022.
She started the year with a quarterfinal run in Melbourne 2 and then a semifinal run in St. Petersburg, where she upset Shuai Zhang, Petra Martic, and Tereza Martincova. The 31-year-old also reached the third round in the Miami Open after dismissing Aryna Sabalenka in the preceding round.
Combined with a similar run in Charleston, Begu’s overall tally for the season stands at 12-10.
Her record in Roland Garros is relatively better than Paolini’s; she has reached the mid-rounds a couple of times while in the doubles, she was a semifinalist just last year with Nadia Podoroska.
Begu v Paolini Prediction and Tip
Paolini is a good player and can put up a solid fight but Begu has experience and momentum going on for her at the moment. This match may go to three sets but ultimately, the experienced Romanian should come out on the top.
