Saville, Capable of Surprises

28-year-old Daria Saville, previously known as Daria Gavrilova, has had to spend the better part of the last couple of seasons battling a recurring achilles tendon injury and plantar fasciitis.

The former world number 20 underwent surgery last year and owing to the recovery and loss in form, she dropped significantly in the singles ranking.

Saville is now World No. 127 – which is an astonishing feat considering she started the year outside the top 400. Her highlights entail reaching the quarterfinal in Guadalajara, the round of 16 in Indian Wells, and the quarterfinal in Miami.

In these tournaments, she defeated a few big names like Ons Jabeur, Elise Mertens, Emma Raducanu, and Katerina Siniakova.

However, the onset of clay swing changed everything as she lost three consecutive opening-round matches in Madrid, Paris Challenger, and Strasbourg. All matches went to three sets, showing Saville’s fighting spirit. She did, however, win the doubles in Strasbourg last week with Nicole Melichar-Martinez.

Grammatikopoulou clears the Qualifiers

Valentini Grammatikopoulou of Greece is set to make her Roland Garros main-draw debut. Her last attempts were ended in the qualifiers but this year, she has gone the distance.

The 25-year-old, ranking #187 at the moment, defeated Valeria Savinykh, Isabella Shinikova, and Christina McHale to achieve this feat.

So far in 2022, the Greek player has restricted herself to low-tier events without much success. Case in point, her best result came in ITF Cairo in April where she reached the quarterfinal. In her last two events in Prague and Saint Gaudens, she fell in the opening match.

On the doubles circuit, however, Grammatikopoulou reached three finals with three different players – all on ITF Tour. Two of them were on clay in Charleston and Saint Gaudens – which she unfortunately lost.

Saville v Grammatikopoulou Prediction and Tip

Saville has the experience and overall form. She is resilient and determined to continue her resurgence on the WTA Tour. While Grammatikopoulou is poised well to throw a few curveballs, Saville should come out as the winner in the end. That said, it may not be the cleanest of the performances from her.
