Rafael Nadal v Corentin Moutet Head to Head

Nadal and Moutet have never played each other before this.

Nadal Tames Thompson in Opener

While Nadal has probably had one of his worst starts to the clay court season because of his fitness issues, he did not show too much of that in his French Open opener this season.

The Spaniard tamed Australia’s Jordan Thompson 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in a little over two hours to complete the one-sided win.

Nadal broke his opponent seven times in the match, but was broken once in return too – it came in the second set while he was cruising anyway – and that’s something the Spaniard would hope to shrug off come more difficult opponents in the matches to follow.

Other than that, however, there wasn’t too much that Nadal did wrong, thwacking 27 winners and winning 75% of the points at the net.

The world number five, who had earlier had a solid start to the season with 20 wins in a row before stumbling to a 3-3 record over the next six matches, should not worry too much about his next opponent either.

Struggling Moutet Shocks Stan

While Stan Wawrinka is a pale shadow of the player he once was, not too many expected Moutet to get past the Swiss player in his opener. Not after losing the first set that easily for sure.

But Moutet overcame that early loss to stun Wawrinka 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-3 in a little less than three hours to set up this meeting with Nadal. In doing so, Moutet also won his first main draw match at Roland-Garros since 2019 where he had registered his best performance of a third round appearance.

Moutet, who got no break-points in the first set and was broken twice in return, then broke Wawrinka twice in the second to level things out. The pair traded breaks in the third to push the set into a tie-breaker where Moutet ran away to with six points in a row to win it.

Wawrinka struggled to hold his serve, getting broken in the fifth game and then again in the ninth to allow Moutet to make round two.

That seems to be as far that Moutet would reach if Nadal’s foot injury doesn’t give him any concerns.

Nadal v Moutet Prediction and Tip

Nadal’s 1/33 to win this which is to be expected and 1/3 for a straight-set win. Going with the latter for starters but one can also look at the games market – less than 27.5 games in this one.

Tip: Nadal to win in straight sets: 1/3 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
