Reigning Indian Wells Masters champion Taylor Fritz survived a first round scare after he was stretched to five sets by Argentinian qualifier Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna.
Having never played at the tour level, it was quite an outstanding performance by the World No. 201 who came back from a set down twice, but in the end the 13th seed American edged through with a 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win.
Both players broke each other seven times in the match, but Taverna hit more aces (9) and winners (54) than Fritz (2 aces, 39 winners). The American however had just one double fault against the Argentine’s seven and also made 12 fewer unforced errors than Taverna’s 58. In all Fritz won 166 of the 316 points in the match that lasted three hours and 34 minutes.
The win puts Fritz into the second round at Roland Garros for the fourth time in his career. He has made it to the third round just once in 2020.

Zapata Miralles Sees Off Mmoh in Three
World no. 131 Bernabe Zapata Miralles won his first main draw match at Roland Garros as the Spanish qualifier knocked out American Michael Mmoh in straight sets.
Zapata Miralles won 71% points on his first serve, converted five of 14 break points and saved five of seven to beat Mmoh 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, 7-5 on Sunday.
The two-hour-and-52-minute contest saw Zapata Miralles hit 58 winners against Mmoh’s 29. The Spaniard also made seven more unforced errors than the American’s 40.
This was Zapata Miralles’s fourth tour-level main draw win of the season and third on clay. Last year, the 25-year-old had lost in the opening round of his Roland Garros debut.
This year, Zapata Miralles had qualified for the main draw with wins over Dudi Sela, Gastão Elias and Luca Nardi. While he won against the former two in straight sets, he had to comeback from a set down against the latter.
Fritz v Zapata Miralles Prediction and Tip
After being stretched in the first round, Fritz will be wary of Zapata Miralles. The Spaniard may be ranked 131st, but he has won four matches in a row now and has settled into a rhythm. Expect another tight contest with Fritz advancing.
