Parry Stuns Defending Champion

Teenager Parry caused arguably the shock of the first round by dumping the defending champion Barbora Krejcikova out of the tournament.

The number two seed became only the third woman in the professional era to exit in the first round of the French Open a year after winning the trophy.

In mitigation, it was her first match back after a three month lay-off because of an injured right elbow, but it was still a huge surprise,, especially after she breezed through the second set for the loss of just one game.

And when Parry was broken at the start of the second set, it looked like Krejcikova was in for a routine win.

Suddenly, though, the Czech woman’s form deserted her as Parry, roared on by the local crowd, fought back.

She got the break back, then moved a further break ahead, and sealed the set with yet another break.

When Parry was broken at the start of the third set, it looked like the Czech had got hold of things again. It was not to be, however. She dropped her serve in turn, and then once more, giving Parry the chance to serve out and wrap up the biggest win of her career to date.

Colombian Osorio Beats French Opposition

Osorio, who was making her second appearance at Roland Garros, had a much less dramatic first round win over Parry’s compatriot, Harmony Tan, the world number 106, on Sunday.

The match got off to a scrappy start with the first three games going against serve, leaving Tan a break up. Osorio, though, hit back to level and, with the Frenchwoman serving to stay in the set, then broke again.

Tan dropped her serve once more early in the second set and that proved to be enough for the Colombian. She was able to close out the match with ease, Tan winning just two more points off her serve.

Parry v Osorio Prediction and Tip

Parry will be full of confidence after her victory over Krejcikova and is likely to receive loud backing from the French crowd again. Osorio, though, is the higher ranked player and more experienced and, if she can keep her nerve, should make that count.
