When Kerber lost two in two matches on clay to kick-start her season things were looking quite downhill for the German having earlier also mostly struggled through the hard court season.
However, Kerber looks to have hit a bit of a purple patch here with what has given her renewed hopes of going deep into this year’s French Open.
Winning the Strasbourg Open was no mean task given Kerber’s form, and the win over Kaja Juvan in the final would have been particularly satisfying. It was a three-setter which saw all three sets go into a tie-breaker and Kerber’s experience seems to stand out.
And in the first round here at Roland-Garros, Kerber continued to show that fight as she came back from a set down to topple Magdalena Frech in three. The German registered a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win after saving two match-points in the final set.

Jacquemot Hurtles Past Heather
It was supposed to be a lot closer than it turned out to be with Jacquemot cruising past the minor favourite Heather Watson in her first round match.
The 19-year-old Jacquemot, who was awarded a wildcard to feature in this tournament, came through 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 46 minutes to carve out her first ever win in the main draw of a Grand Slam event.
Jacquemot raced away to a 3-0 lead before Watson got one of the breaks back but that wasn’t enough as the Frenchman picked off the set off her opponent’s serve in the ninth game.
In the second, it was Watson who got the early break but a break-back in the fourth game and then again in the eighth ended any hopes as Jacquemot marched into round two.
Can the young Frenchwoman now take the attack to her much-heralded opponent in this second round encounter?
