Cori Gauff v Kaia Kanepi Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2021 Parma Open, on clay and Gauff had a tough time getting past Kanepi winning 7-6, 7-6.

Gauff Outlasts Van Uytvanck

It wasn’t the most straightforward straight-set wins for Gauff but she did pull off her second successive one at that when she got past Alison van Uytvanck to reach the third round.

The American world number 23 was on court for an hour and 28 minutes and registered a 6-1, 7-6 (4) victory over her Belgian opponent.

It was a sharp contrast of play in the two sets from Gauff, with the first seeing the American not face a single break-point as compared to the second in which she was broken four times. Gauff broke back four times including once when Van Uytvanck served for the set at 5-3.

After missing out on the chance to serve for the match at 6-5, Gauff wrapped up the encounter in the tie-breaker which followed, sealing her third round match against the experienced Kanepi.

She will need to do a lot better with her serve, especially with the second serve off which she won just 38% of her points.

Kanepi Continues Her Run on Clay

At 36, to have had the kind of year that Kanepi is having is due credit to her durability and endurance. And her second round win over Beatriz Haddad Maia was another example of that.

Kanepi needed just an hour and 29 minutes to get past Haddad Maia, winning 6-4, 6-4 with the Estonian saving all the four break-points she got in the encounter. In return, all that Kanepi needed was one break of serve in each of the two sets, getting it in the third and the seventh games of the two sets respectively.

A combination of 21 winners and just 13 unforced errors in the match helped Kanepi, with the Estonian also winning four of the five points she was at the net.

This follows her shock win from a set down against Garbine Muguruza in the first round, making it her eighth win on clay this year as compared to just three defeats.

Gauff v Kanepi Prediction and Tip

While Gauff starts off a 9/20 favourite to win this, it’s not difficult to see Kanepi make life very difficult for her opponent in this one. Expect a longer-lasting match one way or the other.
