Alize Cornet v Qinwen Zheng Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Cornet Knocks Out Ostapenko

There seems to be a recurring theme of Frenchwomen doing well in this year’s Roland Garros. Diane Perry knocked out Barbora Krejcikova, Leolia Jeanjean defeated Karolina Pliskova and now, Alize Cornet dismissed Jelena Ostapenko.

Among the three, Cornet is the most experienced of the bunch as she leads the revolution in Paris.

Interestingly, 2022 seems to be the year for the 32-year-old when she finally leaves a significant mark on the tour. Earlier in the Australian Open, she reached the quarterfinal after upsetting players like Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep. Since then, however, Cornet fell in the early rounds in the following tournaments while in Madrid and Rome, she lost in the opener itself – respectively to Varvara Gracheva and Halep.

As a result, her tally stands at a mediocre 9-12 as of Friday but if Grand Slams have shown us anything, it’s that anything can happen. Cornet is the local favourite, powered by roaring support from the crowd. As things stand, her path to round four looks quite open.

Zheng Upsets Halep

19-year-old Chinese Qinwen Zheng wrote a bit of history herself when she took out the former world number one Simona Halep 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. Having made her WTA Tour debut only last season in Palermo, the youngster has clearly come a long way since.

Zheng’s highlights of the season include reaching the semis in Melbourne 1, second round in the Australian Open as a qualifier, and winning the ITF title in Orlando.

Her form on clay was disappointing as she fell early in Charleston (retiring against Ekaterina Alexandrova) and Madrid (lost to Karolina Muchova). Nonetheless, she cracked into the top 70 for the first time in her career and now finds herself at the #74 spot.

Cornet v Zheng Prediction and Tip

Cornet, given her experience and ability to play under pressure, will start as the favourite. While Zheng has the energy and physical endurance, the crowd rallying against her may make things a bit tricky for her.

But that isn’t to say she will not put up a fight; this match may go to three sets but Cornet is more likely to emerge as the winner.
