Last year’s quarterfinalist Coco Gauff is one win away from matching her 2021 performance after she moved into the last 16 with another straight sets win on Friday.
The 18th seed needed just an hour and 33 minutes to beat Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 64 in the third round. Broken in the very first game of the match, Gauff hit back, by breaking her opponent thrice and building a 5-1 lead. The Estonian pulled a break back, but Gauff held on to take the first set.
It was Gauff who started the second with a break but Kanepi pulled it back to make it 2-2. The World no. 23 surged ahead again with a break in the seventh before completing a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
The American has cruised into the fourth round without dropping a set this week. She knocked out Rebecca Marino 7-5, 6-0 and Alison Van Uytvanck 6-1, 7-6 in the first two rounds respectively.
With the win, Gauff improved to 17-10 for the season and now the 18-year-old will be looking for a second major quarterfinal.

Mertens Rolls Past Gracheva
After a dominant start, Elise Mertens received a walkover in the second round, but the Belgian looked in good rhythm in the third round on Friday as she dispatched Varvara Gracheva in straight sets.
Mertens, who has made at least the third round of all her six main draw appearances at Roland Garros, will be featuring in the fourth round for the second time at the clay court major. She has never made it past the last 16 though.
Seeded 31st in the tournament, Mertens converted 6 of 14 break points and saved 1 of 3 to beat the Russian 6-2, 6-3.
Mertens had begun her campaign with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Elena-Gabriela Ruse and then got a free pass into the third round after Marie Bouzková pulled out. Will Mertens be able to reach a fourth Grand Slam quarterfinal?
