Anisimova Advances After Muchova Withdrawal
Facing Fernandez in the fourth round will be 20-year-old Amanda Anisimova, who won her third round match after her opponent Karolína Muchová retired in the third set due to an ankle injury.
Anisimova, who had beaten Naomi Osaka 7-5, 6-4 in the first round and Donna Vekić 6-4, 6-1 in the second, lost the opening set in the tiebreak against Muchova, despite building a 1-5 lead. She came back in the second set as Muchova started showing signs of the injury. The Czech player, who had beaten Maria Sakkari in the last round, eventually pulled out while trailing 7-6 (9-7), 2-6, 0-3.
This is the second time in her fifth main draw appearance that Anisimova has reached the last 16 at Roland Garros. She made it to the semifinals in 2019.
Ranked no. 20th in the world, Anisimova is enjoying a terrific season. She won the title in Melbourne and has been extremely good on clay as well, making it to the semifinals in Charleston and the quarterfinals in Madrid and Rome.
