Heather Watson v Katie Volynets Head to Head

It’s advantage Watson with a 1-0 who last beat the American in the 2021 Cincinnati Open qualifiers in three sets.

Volynets on a Roll

20-year-old Katie Volynets is having one of the best seasons of her fresh career this year. Her tally at the moment stands at 21-12 while most recently, she reached the second round in the French Open.

Despite losing to Elena Rybakina that early in Paris, she did post her best results in a major and will be quite pleased with how she has fared in 2022. Moreover, she may be bolstered by her three-set triumph over Viktorija Golubic in the first round.

Admittedly, most of her high notes have come in the ITF tournaments – notably in Palm Harbor, Florida, where she won her second title on the circuit. Later on, Volynets also reached the quarterfinal in Charleston and the semis in Bonita Springs.

Her record is still slim on the WTA Tour as she is yet to win more than two matches in the main draw of any event this year. As a result, she is now ranked #123.

Watson, Struggling with Form

Ranking just 21 places above Volynets, Heather Watson has not had the best of the time of late.

Her clay swing was a disaster when compared to her preceding tournaments; the 30-year-old Brit lost in the first round in Charleston and the French Open while making it as far as round two in Madrid. She also played in the Saint-Malo Challenger and Strasbourg Open but fell to Madison Brengle in the round of 16.

Most of her Watson’s spell this year is dotted with such early exits, sans a surprising third-round stint in the Miami Open where she defeated Arantxa Rus and Elina Svitolina. She ultimately lost to Belinda Bencic.

However, what Heather has working for her is a superior pedigree (four WTA titles, one runner-up feat) and a career-best ranking as World No. 38. That clearly gives her the edge here but as we know, anything can happen early on.

Watson v Volynets Prediction and Tip

Watson will be the odds-on favourite here but given her shaky form and inconsistency, Volynets has a good chance of causing an upset. Backing her would not be the worst play to make while on a safer side, this match can see well over 20 games.

Tip: Over 20.5 Games: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
