Fucsovics Coming off Ordinary Clay Season

Last year’s Wimbledon quarterfinalist, Marton Fucsovics begins his 2022 grass court campaign in Stuttgart on Tuesday.

The World no. 55 has a 3-4 record in Stuttgart and was a quarterfinalist in 2019. Overall, the Hungarian has a 9-12 career record on grass courts.

This year, Fucsovics has an 11-12 record on the tour, with his best being last eight finishes in Rotterdam and Doha.

Last year, Fucsovics defeated Diego Schwartzman and Andrey Rublev en route the quarterfinals in Wimbledon, before losing to eventual winner Novak Djokovic.

He didn’t have a great clay court season, winning consecutive matches just once in four tournaments. He had won his first round match at Roland Garros but fell in the second round to Marin Cilic.

With hopes of doing well in Wimbledon once again, the 30-year-old will look to prepare well for the tournament by producing decent results in the tune-up events, beginning with the one in Stuttgart.

Rodionov Was a Semifinalist Last Year

Following wins over Poland’s Mateusz Terczynski and Russia’s Roman Safiullin, Austria’s Jurij Rodionov qualified for the main draw in Stuttgart.

Rodionov had a splendid run on his tournament debut last year, beating Dominik Koepfer, Peter Gojowczyk (through the German’s retirement) and Alex de Minaur on his way to the semifinals. He eventually retired from his semifinal clash against Marin Cilic, while trailing 3-6, 0-1.

Rodionov, who hasn’t played on grass a lot at any level, is 1-2 on the tour this year. Most recently, he featured in the Surbriton Challenger, falling in the first round to Andy Murray.

Ranked No. 129th in the world, the 23-year-old has won two Challenger titles this year, one in Biel in March and the other in Mauthausen last month.

Can he spring a surprise on Tuesday?
