Clay specialists traditionally don’t do that well on grass courts because the game is so very different on these two surfaces. Anhelina Kalinina is a proper clay expert but her 5-7 record on grass in her career proves she is having trouble with the transition as well.
It’s going to change eventually because she has too much talent to be bad on the surface for long. After all, this is a breakout year for her as she is now very close to making her top 30 debut. She’s 13-9 this year which probably won’t improve that much on grass but she will try.
Her game is not that suited for clay tennis although she likes to be quite aggressive. If she can get her movement to a respectable level on the grass she might be dangerous. A qualifier in round one is a solid opening matchup but she will need to be careful not to crash out.
The French Open experience was a short one but she played Pegula. Gadecki is not Pegula but she will give her a tough time if the Ukrainian allows it.

A Good Chance for Gadecki
Olivia Gadecki is a 20-year old Australian who is slowly making her way to the top of tennis. There is quite a bit of talent there and he will love the chance to play some grass tennis after the clay season.
Gadecki beat two very good players en route to the main draw and that familiarity with the conditions will certainly suit her against Kalinina who never favoured the grass. Richel Hogenkamp and Linda Fruhvirtova are quite solid players so the wins were a good sign of her solid level.
Before those matches, played a grass event in Surbiton with a solid outing so she’s in full grass mode. Her game suits it naturally well as is the case with most Australians.
She lost in the 2nd round of Surbiton against a better player and Kalinina is also that. If the Ukrainian plays her game she will probably have enough to win this match.
Kalinina v Gadecki Prediction and Tip
So Kalinina is the better player and last week in Surbiton Gadecki got beaten by a better player. The Australian is solid and is playing well but she clearly is not really to take on some of the best the WTA has to offer. Overall I think she will put up a good fight but I’m not sure she will have enough.
Kalinina should win this match and I believe she will. It’s a good introductory match for her and despite not being that good on grass she must win matches like these if she hopes to progress the way she has so far this year. Take her to get it done in three sets.
