Alex de Minaur v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

The pair have met only once before, but that was scarcely a week ago at the Brisbane International when teenager de Minaur disposed of Thompson, five years his senior, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

De Minaur’s the Future Hope, Thompson Looks to Hang in

He went on to lose to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals after that win over Thompson, but has continued his good form into this week, beating Serbian Dušan Lajović in straight sets in the first round, and then the world 116, Reilly Opelka on Wednesday, although he had to battle through a second set tie break to clinch the match.

Thompson, a wild card entrant to the tournament, who is currently ranked 72 in the world, enjoyed a comfortable first round victory over France’s Adrian Mannarino, currently some 28 places above him in the rankings, and then came through a three-set encounter with Tano Daniel of Japan, clinching the third set 6-0.

De Minaur v Thompson – Who will Win?

De Minaur will start as big favourite to win the match. Not only is he ranked some 40 places above his opponent who he beat easily just a week ago, but the 2018 ATP Newcomer of the Year has been tipped as the most likely home-grown player to make an impact at the Australian Open which starts next week.

Victory in this match would be further affirmation of the progress he is making.  He would appear to have too much strength in all facets of his game for Thompson, who has done well to reach this stage in Sydney, but few will expect him to go further this time round.
