Tight Squeeze Past McDonald for Ivashka

Ilya Ivashka had to dig deep in round one against Mackenzie McDonald as the American proved one tough opponent to beat. It was a fairly competitive and balanced match between two players with a similar level overall. Ivashka is quite good on grass but he let this match slip away a bit.

The 2nd set ended in a tiebreak where Ivashka had an 8-7 lead but ultimately McDonald proved better 10-8. The Belarussian did not get discouraged and smashed his opponent 6-1 in the next set. It’s been a short season for him so far as an injury kept him out for a long time.

He only played 20 matches this year with a 9-11 record. He’s certainly capable of more a he proved it last year by posting a 43-20 record. Ivashka was 10-5 on grass last year with a solid showing at Wimbledon. He serves well and attacks with precision.

On his best day, he can trouble the best in the world and especially grass gives him the chance to extend matches until the tiebreak where anything can happen.

Strong Comeback for Ruusuvuori

Emil Ruusuvuori opened his match againt Botic van de Zandschulp is shaky fashion. His serve was not hitting its targets and he was misfiring a lot. By the end of the set, he caught some rhythm but still lost it 3-6. He only dropped three games in the next two sets playing superb tennis.

Something happened with the Dutch player as he wasn’t very good in that part of the match. There might have been some injury in place but nothing was said afterwards. All in all, it showed a new comfort level from Ruusuvuori who has been improving steadily ever since last year.

He showed an improved level on clay this year so a similar thing was in play for grass as well. 22-15 is the score so far which is good. He’s fairly close to the top 50 which certainly was a goal before the season started. On grass last year it was 2-3 with Marcos Giron proving better at Wimbledon.

Expectations have risen this year and this is a solid chance to prove that he is ready to take the next step.

Ivashka v Ruusuvuori Prediction and Tip

These two players saw plenty of each in the past year. Last year it was three matches with Ivashka winning two of those. The latest one was the only one close as the other two were won easily by Ivashka. The Belarussian certainly is the more complete player overall which should help him on grass.

However, he will need to find a way to counter the serve of the Finnish player. Ruusuvuori certainly proved he can still be shaky at times which is the biggest minus in his game. Overall I feel Ivashka is more steady and I like his grass record better.

It should be competitive but the Belarussian should have the slight edge. He might be a bit fatigued after that McDonald match so be careful.

Tip: Ivashka to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
