Elise Mertens v Alison Van Uytvanck Head to Head

The tally stands at 1-1; Mertens got the last laugh in the 2018 Madrid Open where she prevailed in straight sets.

Mertens Survives Sanders

Belgian No. 1 Elise Mertens started her grass campaign on a wobbly note as she played the Australian qualifier Storm Sanders.

The matches lasted for two hours and 18 minutes and saw Elise bag the win with 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-2. After struggling in the first set, she found her rhythm rather quickly as she made quick work of Sanders to reach round two in the Libema Open.

Her tally for the season now stands at 14-10; the highlights include reaching the fourth round in the French Open and Australian Open, alongside a couple of quarterfinal stints in Strasbourg and St. Petersburg. While she hasn’t been entirely phenomenal, she has done just enough to stay afloat in the top 40 (now ranked World No. 29).

On the doubles side of things, Mertens is #1 as she reached three finals with Veronika Kudermetova in Dubai, Doha, and Miami. Clearly, she is experienced and skilled – but a lack of inconsistency on the singles circuit makes things a bit tricky for her now and then.

Van Uytvanck Starts Strong

Mertens’ compatriot Alison Van Uytvanck had a far more comfortable start as she defeated Tamara Korpatsch 6-4, 7-5.

Perhaps, this may have something to do with her early start on grass; the 28-year-old won the ITF Surbiton last week to clinch her 13th title on the circuit and second on grass.

It was Uytvanck’s sole highlight of the season as she struggled to deliver successive wins in all other tournaments – sans Lyon Open where she reached the quarters. In the French Open, Indian Wells, WTA Doha, and other such events, Alison was beaten in the opening rounds.

Her last singles title came in the 2021 Astana Open and before that, it was in Tashkent in 2019. While her singles flair may be a little bit like her compatriot’s with just 16 ranking places separating the two, her overall form clearly makes her the underdog here.

Mertens v Van Uytvanck Prediction and Tip

Mertens is the odds-on favourite and on paper, she may very well win this one. While she makes for a safe bet, backing Van Uytvanck may not be the worst wager to make either. Surprises have been known to happen and given her recent grass form, she is certainly primed to deliver one.

All in all, expect a good game of tennis here.
