Auger-Aliassime Was a Semifinalist Last Year

Shocked by Tim van Rijthoven in the semifinals at ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Felix Auger-Aliassime will look to bounce back in Halle.

The Canadian, ranked No. 9 in the world, was a semifinalist on his debut in Halle last year, and that included a three-set come-from-behind win over Roger Federer in the round of 16. Auger-Aliassime had also beaten Hubert Hurkacz in that tournament and his Monday’s opponent Giron in the last eight, before falling to eventual champion Ugo Humbert.

The 21-year-old, who won his first ATP title in Rotterdam this year and also reached a 10th final in Marseille, brings a 28-14 season record to the tournament.

He has a 20-7 record on grass and was a quarterfinalist in Wimbledon last year. He will be disappointed after being beaten by the World No. 205 in Rosmalen, but will look to overcome the upset quickly and push for another deep run in Halle.

Giron Struggling for Form

World no. 53 Marcos Giron has not been in best of forms this season. The American was a semifinalist in Dallas, a quarterfinalist in Acapulco and reached the fourth round in Rome, but apart from those three tournament, the 28-year-old has made 12 first round exits, while winning just one more opening round match.

Giron suffered his most recent defeat to Jan-Lennard Struff in the opening round in Stuttgart.

An 8-16 season record is not too encouraging for the American, and neither will a 3-4 tour level record on grass will help his confidence. But Giron will look to draw inspiration from his last year’s performance in Halle, when he reached the quarterfinals as a qualifier. It remains his best-ever showing on the surface. Can he replicate that feat?
