Kasatkina will be playing her first match since reaching the semi-finals of the French Open, before her run was ended in emphatic fashion by the world number one Iga Świątek.
As a consequence, she is once again close to her all-time singles ranking, but she is one of those players who will be denied the chance to compete at Wimbledon this year because of the ban imposed on players of her nationality.

Kalinina’s Modest Grass Court Form
Kalinina has no form to speak of on grass – she has failed to qualify for Wimbledon in any of her previous attempts, stretching back to 2015.
At least she knows that, this time round, she is guaranteed a place in the main draw courtesy of her ranking, so this will be valuable practice for her ahead of that.
And she will gain a little confidence from the fact that she did win her first match in Rosmalen last week, albeit against an Australian qualifier, before her progress was halted by Kasatkina’s compatriot, Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Her best results of the year so far have been on clay, having reached the last eight in both Charleston and Madrid.

Inevitably when Russian and Ukrainian players meet in a match these days there is an edge to the match that has little to do with sport, and this encounter will be no different.
That aside, though, Kasatkina is in fine recent form and the better grass court player on paper, and she will expect to make the next round in Germany.
